So I sought a man among them who would make a wall (hedge) and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found one.
A gap is a break or a breach especially in a wall. To stand in the gap is a metaphor for “committed intercession.” There is a gap between God and man. An intercessor tries to bridge this gap by repairing / restoring it through intercessory prayer. The prophet Ezekiel is sharing God’s heart. Verses’ 1-29 provides information that reads like today’s headlines and late breaking news stories. Verse 30 describes the judgment of God because He could not find “one” gap stander in the land that was full of idolatry. Where did God look for gap standers? Everywhere! God looked at politicians, the religious leaders and preachers and the people. Let’s examine each group;
- Princes / politicians, kings, sheiks, governors and rulers
They shed blood, mocked the family unit, oppressed the stranger, abused orphans, profaned the Holy and Holy things with sacrilege. They were slanderous, lewd – uncovered their father’s nakedness. Violated and made an abomination of women. They took bribes to shed blood with extortion. They were godless and made dishonest profits. God found “No Gap Standers” in the political leaders.
- Prophets / leaders of the religious leaders
Like roaring lions they tore their prey. They devoured people. They took treasures and precious things. They made widows in their midst. They plastered with untempered mortar (practiced fraud.) They saw false visions and practiced witchcraft. No wonder “No Gap Standers” could be found among this bunch of “phony baloney!”
- Priest / preachers – ministers
They violated God’s laws. They profaned holy things by polluting the holy with the unholy and the clean with the unclean. They profaned God’s Sabbath. God was profaned among them. Definitely “No Gap Standers” among them.
- People / the land
Just look at the role models and mentors listed above. No wonder the people used oppression. They committed robbery and mistreated the poor and the needy. They wrongfully oppressed the stranger (the immigrant). Again, “No Gap Standers” found!
If God will find “Gap Standers” this is what He will do; “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and forgive their sin and heal their land.” 2nd Chron. 7:14. AMEN, AMEN and AMEN!!!
